  Cafe de Lune

Those of you who know me know my favourite cafe is Cafe de Lune just outside Lancaster. This place holds a significance for me as it is the place I managed to ride to each day over the winter when I wasn't very well.

Set beside the Lune Estuary at Conder Green the cafe is a haven for cyclist from all over Cumbria,Lancashire and beyond. On a sunny day (not like the day I visited) there isn't a seat to be had outside as cyclists flock there for the lovely homemade cakes and good coffee, all at a reasonable price. The bike racks are usually full and there is a lovely buzz about the place, but I loved visiting even through the winter.Without this place I'm not sure this website would ever have been started.

When I visited I had a lovely chocolate cake,I don't really believe in any other form of cake and a filter coffee for around £3.40 which is a bargain in my book.It was deserted but it was blowing a gale and the rain was lashing down, but it is a lovely place to just sit and gather your thoughts before setting out on the journey back again. They also do a great breakfast and a great range of cakes and hot puddings. My aim is to get through the full menu before the end of 2011.

Most importantly there is always a friendly face behind the counter, something often welcome but lacking in cafes. After riding many miles over the Trough of Bowland it really is lovely to arrive at a nice, unpretentious and welcoming cafe.

During the summer it opens 10-4.30 weekdays & 10-5.00 at weekends.

It really is worth a visit. I will probably be found lounging around outside eating chocolate cake.

Cafe nameMAE'S Tea Rooms and Gallery
LocationThe Old School Uldale Cumbria CA7 1HA
Route you were takingA 2½ hour potter around the North West corner of the Lake District National Park
Bike racks available?No
Opening Hours10:30 - 17:00 Every day Evening Meals on Fridays and Saturdays
Cafe's websitehttp://maestearooms.co.uk/
What did you have? Two pots of tea and Chocolate cake (with cream drizzled over it) :o)
How was it?Fantastic. All the food there is homemade. Mark, the owner is the Cake Maker - and they are spectacular! There is only a small range of Puddingy things: Chocolate Cake; Victoria Sponge; Lemon Cheesecake and Sticky Toffee Pudding, but I've sampled almost everything, and the choice is always difficult. They have just started doign a crumble too - which just HAS to be tried If you want more, then they also do a range of fantastic sandwiches with homemeade bread (that'll be Mark again) Homemade soup which can be had in combo with a sarnie for a complete meal and on a Sunday you can pop in for a 3 course Sunday Lunch. But don't expect to be able to ride again too soon afterwards!!!
Good value for money?Very good. Today was under £6 A week or so ago I stopped off after about 60 miles and had tea (it's always loose leaf) for thirst, coffee because that's what I wanted to drink; Soup and bread; Chocolate Cake and Lemon Cheescake - and it came to £13. Yes - I know - that was a BIT piggy and the ride home was slightly uncomfortable. But £13 for all that..!!
Any other information? There is the option to sit outside on nice days and they are very welcoming to cyclists.

Cafe nameWatermill Café
LocationPriest's Mill, Caldbeck, Cumbria, CA7 8DR
Route you were takingThis was a 30 mile out and back from home specifically to have breakfast at this café! :o)
Bike racks available?No
Opening HoursOPENING HOURS 2011: 27th January 2011 to 12th February 2011 10:00am - 4.00pm 13th February 2011 to 30th October 2011 9:00am - 5:00pm
Cafe's websitehttp://www.watermillcafe.co.uk/cafe.htm
What did you have?Tea for 2 - with loose leaves and a strainer and everything... Lemon Cake
How was it?Lovely!
Good value for money?Very! Although this was just a quick stop, Tea for both of us and a reasonable sized chunk of cake was less than £6
Any other information?I could easily have eaten enough to cause actual pain here. The freshly made sandwiches have a garnish that is a meal in itself, both the crumble and sticky toffee pudding (with obligatory 'lashings' of custard) were screaming to be sampled. The homemade brownies, butter shortbread and various other goodies will simply HAVE to be tried at another time. There are a great range of coffees and teas for all tastes, including decaf options for those that are so inclined. It would be very easy to eat enough nice food here to make riding away an uncomfortable experience!! Although there are no bike-specific facilities, there is a large enclosed area at the back where bikes can be left safely - and when the weather is good there are tables there for eating outside, which we did on a previous occasion. Oh - and they had Christmas Pud... in July. That is pure class :o)

Route taken:
Lancaster - Levens - Bowness - Ambleside - Grasmere - Dunmail Raise - Thirlmere - Keswick - Whinlatter - Lorton - Buttermere - Honister - Keswick  and back to Lancaster.  Ride report and photos: http://lunercc.org.uk/edgar-ride-2011-report

What did we have?
Coffees, teas, organic cola (good bottle refill diluted with water!)
Date slices, Hummus toasties, bowl of olives, 3-bean burrito

Good tasty food, friendly staff. Waiting for table, getting the orders through and served as well as the time required to eat through the massive portions made this the longest cafe stop we could envisage. Downside: Bacon cravings will not be fulfilled :-)

Cost/Value for money
Expensive as far as cycling cafes are concerned but that's OK. This place is quite special.

Facilities for cyclists
Well furnished and friendly bike shop on 1st floor. cycle parking limited to leaving bikes by the side alley.
